2 Nights Away
Tuesday 15th June Depart Moyaliffe House and travel to ‘KILLURNEY’ near FETHARD, CO. TIPPERARY, a lovely garden with stunning views of the Comeragh mountains. Owner Mildred Stokes will guide us around her garden, lovingly created over 40 years. Coffee break at Fethard in Dooks café. Continue to KILMOKEA HOUSE AND GARDENS, CAMPILE, CO. WEXFORD via ferry at Duncannon. This beautiful garden will entrance you with its formal gardens, Italian loggia and pool and the spectacular woodland gardens. We will have lunch in the conservatory overlooking the rose gardens. In the afternoon we travel to nearby COLCLOUGH WALLED GARDEN where this fine example of a Georgian walled garden has been fully restored. A river flowing through the garden is a unique feature. Snacks can be had at the onsite café following our walk. We then return to Moyaliffe House for an overnight stay. Dinner at Moyaliffe House will feature fresh produce from the walled garden. |

WEDNESDAY 16TH JUNE
Depart Moyaliffe House for ANNE’S GROVE GARDEN, MALLOW, CO. CORK. This William Robinson inspired garden is well known in Ireland and internationally for its collection of Rhododendrons and exotic plants. Gifted to the State in 2016, it is currently undergoing restoration by the OPW. Depart Anne’s Grove and travel to Cork to ‘COOSHEEN’ GARDEN, CORK, home of plantswoman Hester Forde. She and her husband Patrick created this small wonder of a garden over 35 years. Her skill as a designer and Horticulturist is very evident here and you will be delighted by the variety of plants found in such a relatively small space. We will have lunch locally at Meadows & Byrne café where we can browse the shop and nursery before departing to travel to nearby BALLYMALOE HOUSE & GARDENS, SHANAGARRY, CO. CORK. Ballymaloe is well known for its Cookery School. Our guided tour will introduce you to a variety of garden experiences within Ballymaloe including the Ornamental fruit garden, the Kitchen Potager, the Herb garden, herbaceous borders and celtic maze. We can enjoy a browse in their garden shop, filled with locally produced goodies. We return to Moyaliffe House for an overnight stay. Dinner will be at Parker’s Restaurant in Holycross, a ten minute drive from Moyaliffe House. |

THURSDAY, 17TH JUNE Depart Moyaliffe House for CLONOHILL GARDENS, COOLRAIN, PORTLAOISE, CO. LAOIS. Owned and gardened by Enda Thompson-Phelan, it is a garden of many parts with each beautifully put together and tended. Look out for a walled garden with a difference, woodland gardens, herbaceous borders and many unusual plants. We will enjoy scones and morning teas/coffees here. Proceed then to FRUITLAWN GARDEN, ABBEYLEIX, CO. LAOIS. This is the home garden created 10 years ago by Garden Designer Arthur Shackleton. It sits within a walled garden of about an acre in size. The formal layout includes a hornbeam tunnel, paths and hedges. The feel of the garden is one of informal loveliness with climbing roses featuring against the honey coloured stone walls. There are perennial borders over flowing with rare and unusual plants, collected from notable Irish gardens by Arthur. Other features are a small orchard within a wildflower meadow and fruit and vegetable gardens. We will have lunch at Fruitlawn Garden then depart for GASH GARDENS, CASTLETOWN, CO. LAOIS. Gash gardens are owned by Horticulturists Mary Keenan and Ross Doyle and have been created over 25 years into a 4 acre plantsperson’s oasis. In this tranquil garden, water abounds with streams, ponds and waterfalls and a riverside walk. Add to this the mix of textures, scents and flowers from the myriad of plants and trees and you have a garden of great enjoyment. We will allow time to peruse the onsite nursery where plants can be purchased. Depart Gash gardens for Moyaliffe House and the end of the tour. Historic Moyaliffe House is home to your tour leader, Lorna Vallely.
The landscaped grounds of 12 acres surround the house which dates from 1820, a feature of which are the 200 year old Beech, Oak and Lime trees. The grounds also include a Beech walk, the remains of a 12th century Norman castle on top of a motte and the grand water fountain and pond. Another feature of Moyaliffe is its 2 acre walled garden which is listed on Ireland’s Register of Protected Structures. This is currently undergoing restoration with a newly built glasshouse hoping to emulate the Victorian era. There is an orchard planted within the walled garden and vegetables, herbs and soft fruit growing being carried out. The river Clodagh flows along one side of the garden and there are frequent sightings of swans and herons. Rare sightings of Otters along the river cause great excitement! Your comfortable accommodation within Moyaliffe House assures you of garden or river views, dinner if applicable of locally sourced ingredients, often with produce from the walled garden, and a tasty breakfast. Feel free to wander through the grounds or play a game of tennis on the all weather tennis court. |
