TUESDAY 10TH AUGUST Depart Moyaliffe House and travel to BELLEFIELD HOUSE, SHINRONE, CO. OFFALY. Angela Jupe is a noteworthy Garden Designer. Her talent as a designer is clearly evident with the development of these gardens centred around a collection of characterful outhouses and a large walled garden. The walled garden is sure to impress with the beautiful planting, a glasshouse cleverly built from architectural salvage materials and a summerhouse complete with cupola as a centre piece in the walled garden. Angela will have plants for sale as well as the local GORTKELLY NURSERY which specialises in perennials. From here we travel to FRUITLAWN, ABBEYLEIX, CO. LAOIS. This is the home garden created 10 years ago by Garden Designer Arthur Shackleton. It sits within a walled garden of about an acre in size. The formal layout includes a hornbeam tunnel, paths and hedges. The feel of the garden is one of informal loveliness with climbing roses featuring against the honey coloured stone walls. There are perennial borders over flowing with rare and unusual plants, collected from notable Irish gardens by Arthur. Other features are a small orchard within a wildflower meadow and fruit and vegetable gardens. We will enjoy lunch in the lovely garden at Fruitlawn. Following lunch at Fruitlawn, we proceed to HEYWOOD GARDENS, BALLINAKILL, CO. LAOIS. Heywood gardens are a delight with extensive woodlands, lakes and formal terraced gardens set high into a hill. The highlight of your visit will be the sunken garden with its magnificent fountain and pond and surrounded by the oval garden. The hand of master designers is evident here as the gardens were designed by a collaboration of Edwin Lutyens and the great plantswoman Gertrude Jekyll in 1912. These more recent gardens are set within far older pleasure grounds featuring ancient oaks and beech trees. Return to Moyaliffe House for an overnight stay. Dinner at Moyaliffe House will feature fresh produce from the walled garden. |

WEDNESDAY, 11TH AUGUST
Depart Moyaliffe House for CAPPOQUIN HOUSE AND GARDEN, CAPPOQUIN, CO. WATERFORD. CAPPOQUIN HOUSE is the ancestral home of the Keane family since 1735. The house was completely rebuilt in the 1920’s and great care was taken to replace original fixtures and fittings. This is a large south facing hillside garden with magnificent mature trees, a formal sunken garden and views over the Blackwater Valley. Here we have a garden walk, house tour and short talk from the head gardener, Mark. Depart Cappoquin House for nearby TOURIN HOUSE AND GARDENS. The gardens at Tourin House extend over 25 acres, with the original garden dating from 1840. Enjoy the mature trees and shrubs, the walled garden and extensive pleasure gardens including a pond and revived rockery. We will have lunch here in the dining room along with a garden tour. Depart Tourin House for MOUNT CONGREVE GARDENS, KILMEADEN, CO. WATERFORD. Travel on the Suir Valley Railway and arrive at the garden station for entry to gardens. Have afternoon teas/coffees here and then enjoy a tour of the gardens by the head gardener. Return to Moyaliffe House and end of tour. Historic Moyaliffe House is home to your tour leader, Lorna Vallely.
The landscaped grounds of 12 acres surround the house which dates from 1820, a feature of which are the 200 year old Beech, Oak and Lime trees. The grounds also include a Beech walk, the remains of a 12th century Norman castle on top of a motte and the grand water fountain and pond. Another feature of Moyaliffe is its 2 acre walled garden which is listed on Ireland’s Register of Protected Structures. This is currently undergoing restoration with a newly built glasshouse hoping to emulate the Victorian era. There is an orchard planted within the walled garden and vegetables, herbs and soft fruit growing being carried out. The river Clodagh flows along one side of the garden and there are frequent sightings of swans and herons. Rare sightings of Otters along the river cause great excitement! Your comfortable accommodation within Moyaliffe House assures you of garden or river views, dinner if applicable of locally sourced ingredients, often with produce from the walled garden, and a tasty breakfast. Feel free to wander through the grounds or play a game of tennis on the all weather tennis court. |
